Some of the most successful spaces for learning are the fuzzy, undefined spaces between specialized academic space and the spaces of informal day to day exchange. We envision that the IPD Facility will display to UBC, Vancouver and the world at large, the opportunities offered for trans-disciplinary exchange in the ‘Space Between’ related components: between departments and stakeholders, between inside and outside, and between specialized and informal learning spaces . This charged space extends to the overlap between the related disciplines of Planning, Architecture, Landscape and the Arts. The new Integrated Planning and Development Facility will re-energize the Arts Precinct of the UBC campus, by considering both the positive potential energy emerging from human exchange, and the physical energy required to facilitate this exchange. Carefully planned architecture and landscape can propagate human energy within a new paradigm of regeneration and sustainability.
